The Yamaha MT-09 (2024+) in the real world
The MT-09 is what a lot of MT-07 owners move up to, and the riding position is deliberately part of the pitch: same tall, wide handlebar and upright torso, but with more room to spread out. The seat sits at 825 mm and the cockpit is physically longer than the 07’s, so the seat-to-peg stretch opens up — the knee bend that starts to pinch taller riders on the smaller Yamaha eases off here. That extra height is the flip side. At 825 mm the MT-09 is taller than most of the twins in this class, and unlike the 07 there’s no LAMS version to fall back on — the 890 cc triple is full-power only, so this is a full-licence bike whichever way you look at it. Who the MT-09 fits
Suits taller riders (185 cm and up) especially well — the roomy seat-to-peg gap is the main reason MT-07 owners size up to it.
At 825 mm the seat is tall for the class; riders under about 170 cm should confirm their ground reach above rather than assume the twins’ friendliness carries over.
The tall, wide bar puts you fully upright with almost no forward lean — an easy all-day commuting posture with low wrist load.
No LAMS variant exists, so learner riders can’t use this model — the XSR700 or MT-07LA are the restricted-licence routes into the same upright Yamaha feel.
Common fit & comfort changes
Lowering links — The go-to fix for the tallish 825 mm seat — links drop the rear a couple of centimetres to improve the stop, trading a little ground clearance and quickening the steering slightly.
Comfort seat — Aftermarket seats add foam for longer rides and some are cut lower or reshaped narrower at the nose, which helps the reach to the ground as well as the padding.
Bar back-brackets — Small brackets pull the already-upright bar closer, tightening the cockpit for shorter-armed riders without changing the relaxed torso angle.
